What's the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention is when the assistant names your business in the text. A citation is when it links your page as a source. They happen separately and are measured differently.
A mention is when an AI assistant names your business inside the text of its answer. A citation is when it links one of your pages as a source for that answer. They're different things and they happen separately: you can be mentioned without being cited, cited without being mentioned, or neither. Mixing them up leads to mismeasuring the results of any AEO work.
How do the two combine?
| Situation | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Mention without citation | The engine names you but links to other sites | Your business is in the model's memory or in third-party sources, but your site wasn't the source |
| Citation without mention | The engine links your page but doesn't name your business | Your content served as a source on the topic, without the business standing out |
| Mention and citation | It names you and links you | The complete case: you appear as an option and as an authority |
| Neither | You don't show up | The most common starting point |
The quadrant that confuses people most is the second one. You see traffic coming from an assistant and conclude it's recommending you, when in fact it used your page to explain a concept and recommended someone else.
Why does the distinction matter?
Because each one is earned differently and serves a different purpose.
The mention is what sells. It's what the user reads and decides on. It depends on the engine associating your business with the category, and that's built mostly off your site: on the third-party pages that compare you, review you and list you.
The citation is what attributes. It's what leaves a measurable trail: a link someone can click, which sometimes arrives tagged in your analytics. It depends mostly on your own site, and so it's the part you can move fastest.
An uncomfortable consequence: you can raise the number of citations a lot without moving a single sale, if the business still isn't named as a recommendation. That's why it's worth reporting the two separately instead of merging them into a single score.
What comes first?
The citation first, because it depends on you: checking that AI crawlers can read the site and that the pages answer the category's questions directly.
The mention comes later and takes longer, because it depends on sources you don't control.
