What is AEO?

Optimizing so an answer engine names your business inside the text it generates. The unit of success is the mention, not the click.

Definition by Apoda, GEO platform Updated October 9, 2026 Full glossary

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing a business's content and authority so an answer engine — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Copilot — names it inside the answer it generates. Unlike SEO, whose unit of success is the click on a link, AEO's unit of success is the mention: the user can read the business's name, decide on that basis and never visit the site.

AEO and GEO are synonyms: they name the same work and only differ in where each acronym comes from. Apoda uses GEO as its main term and AEO as a declared synonym.

Why does it matter that the unit is the mention and not the click?

Because it changes everything you can measure. In SEO, the search engine shows a link, the user taps it and arrives at your site, where your analytics records it. In AEO, much of the value happens before any visit: someone asked about your category, the engine named three businesses and the decision has already narrowed to those three.

If you only measure traffic, that moment is invisible. That's why AEO is measured on the answers themselves: running prompts, saving the text each engine returns and counting how many runs your business appears in.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO AEO
What's optimized That your page appears in the list of results That your business appears inside the text of the answer
Unit of success The click The mention
Where it's measured Search Console and site analytics In each engine's answers
What you control Your site Your site, plus the third-party sources the engine cites
Stability of the data High: position moves little from one day to the next Low: the same prompt can give different answers

The last row is the one that surprises people coming from SEO the most. The same prompt run twice can give two different answers, so any serious AEO measurement has to repeat each query several times and report a range.

Can you do AEO without doing SEO?

In practice, not entirely. Engines cite pages that already have authority, and that authority is built with the usual work: content that answers real questions, third-party sites that mention you, a technically healthy site.

What AEO adds is the measurement layer on top of generated answers and the specific work that comes out of it: checking that AI crawlers can read your site, seeing which sources each engine is citing for your category, and writing so that a standalone passage still makes sense outside its page.

Are AEO and GEO the same?

Almost. They're two acronyms for the same work, with different origins. It's explained in what is GEO?.
